Bakuriani is a very famous ski resort among the Georgians. It is located between the mountains of the Lesser Caucasus. It is only 40 minutes from Borjomi and two and a half hours from Tbilisi by car. In winter, the ski lifts are fully operational and there is a really nice atmosphere in its bars, clubs, and restaurants.
It has a dozen tracks for different levels and also areas for cross-country skiing, ice skating, or snowmobiling. In summer, the village is much quieter and people come for hiking, mountain biking, or horse riding.
A good plan is to rent a mountain bike at the tourist office and go to Tsighisvar (5 miles), Andesite (2 miles), or if you get up early and you are in good physical shape, maybe go directly to Lake Tabatskuri (17 miles). You can also go by taxi, although you will have to negotiate the price with the driver.
Bakuriani has a good range of accommodation: around 25 hotels and 200 shelters. Although in summer, some of them will close.
The environment is amazing and if you are in the area and you have time, it is worth to visit this part of Georgia and breathe some fresh air. To get there, you should take the Kukushka, a historic train from the time of the Russian Empire that, although is slow, crosses beautiful landscapes. You can go back to the capital via minibus.
